Abstract Extensive drillings and 31 new C-14 datings were used to establish the geomorphological evolution of the Turia river delta and coastal barrier-lagoon system of Valencia (Spain) over the last three millennia. Integration of geomorphological, stratigraphic, malacological, sedimentological and geoarchaeological data enables us to relate river Turia avulsions and alluvial episodes to the development of coastal spits and barriers. Geomorphological changes in the study area may also be associated with global climate events, sea-level fluctuations or anthropogenic periods in the Turia catchment. Abstract Subsidence, changes in sediment supply and environments, sea storms, current sedimentary deficit and recent anthropic action are factors determining coastal geomorphological processes and evolution of a transgressive Mediterranean coastal barrier. At a longer timescale, the barrier landward migration is partially due to local subsidence of tectonic origin. Peatmarsh remains under seawater at around 100 m from the present-day coastline (4821–4566 and 4874‒4820 cal BP) show evidence of the more advanced position towards the sea of the late Holocene coastal barrier, which has not been preserved. The most common coastal sedimentary forms on the arctic coast of the Varanger Peninsula are raised beach ridge plains. The majority of the ridges consist of coarse material, but there are also sandy beach ridge areas close to the river mouths of some of the major rivers. Where should we take cores for palaeotsunami research? It is generally considered that local depressions with low energy environments such as wetlands are one of the best places. However, it is also recognized that the presence or absence of palaeotsunami deposits (and their relative thickness) is highly dependent upon subsoil microtopography.
